Mortal Deeds

Yesterday someone saw me
For what I really am
Can’t let those who aren’t ready
Interfere with the plan
Spread my wings and headed skyward
But I knew they’d already seen
South of Oakland almost 4 degrees
There’s a city named after beings like me
And I feel myself drawn there
Like so many mortals do
Can’t let them know I’m going
Until I’m already gone
This place holds great abundance
But I must be moving on
Hide my face with cheap sunglasses
Clothe myself in bluest blue
You couldn’t make me out against the sky
But it takes so much effort to travel upon high
So I take the Coast Starlight
Like so many mortals do
There will be churches there
So I can do the work that I was
Sent down to accomplish
You will see it when it’s time
I knew I had to call you
So you wouldn’t start to worry
You can follow if you want to
In a week or maybe two
Get off just north of the city
And step out in the sun
My mind is clear with purpose
Of what needs to be done
Take a minute to feel my surroundings
Send a prayer up to the Lord
There’s something to be said for the mundane
The oh-so-human urges for pleasure and for pain
I am so enraptured
By what these mortals do

You can hide arsenic in anything, but sugar works the best
Cuz nobody expects sweetness from a girl like me
My magic never holds up when you put it to the test
Something’s coming, wards are falling from their nails on the trees
And if I can’t keep us safe
All of this will be for naught
I’ve pushed everyone away
I will never let myself get caught
We will never leave our castle
No this isn’t over yet
Smash our windows while we’re running
From the fire that I set
Try to aid or interfere
I’ll put you in an early grave
There is nothing here that you would want to save
Cover up the windows, they can’t know that we’re still home
We are going to be so very happy on our own
They keep coming, trying to see us, asking if we’re still alive
They might know that we’re still in here but they’ll never come inside
Everything will be fine
If we both stick to the rules
How I love you, sister mine
You’re the only one I never fooled
You can’t take us from our castle
This was over when it began
There’s so much for you to fear
So leave your tribute while you can
There’s so much for us to do
There’ll be no rest and no reprieve
There’s no reason that we’d ever want to leave
Don’t come begging us for money, run away and hide your shame
You are going to wish you’d never learned to say our names
When you’re talking near the doors we’re listening from the other side
You can be a ghost even though you are still alive
